Mobile phones are not allowed near petrol because there is a small chance of explosion if gasoline fumes are ignited by the electrical activity inside the phone as an incoming call and lighting the screen up. This is a very rare occurrence but catastrophic when it happened.
People do think that
the connectors down could trigger, but it was proven not to work. The theory of
"cell phones ignite gasoline vapors is a myth. It is actually more at risk
if you wear clothes made of nylon or
other synthetic near the pumps because they accumulate static as they rub
against you and other things, so that you discharge static electricity (and
therefore cause a spark) next to gasoline, while filling your car, ignite, it
is more likely to happen in the United States where they have automatic pumps -
the driver puts the pump in the car, let run, get in the car (and thus the
static constitution as clothing rubbing against the seat or the person folded),
returns the car key, the pump ... BANG! No more driver.
Anyway, back to your
question, I explained the theory behind why cell phones are prohibited
in the vicinity of pumps, but in practice it
just does not happen and you're probably 99.9 % safe
to use your cell phone
near gas pumps - just do not wear nylon!
